The Little Things & Great People
Doing the dishes.
Mowing the lawn.
Sleeping through the night.
Little things that I usually speed right through, not giving them a second thought.
Last week I was at a large conference for work, and subsequently came back home not feeling well. I haven’t been sick in quite a while, so I thought this was going to come and go quickly. Well, that was definitely not the case. It wasn’t covid, fortunately, but it certainly knocked me out of commission for a while. My incredible wife took very good care of me. Since all I could do was lay around, I was forced to reflect on the ‘little things’ that I wasn’t able to do.
So, after getting a bit of energy yesterday, I took a chance and tried to mow the lawn without coughing like a maniac or passing out. I’m happy to report, Mission Accomplished!
The whole experience made me appreciate the ability to do the little things, as well as the great people that take care of us when we’re not well! 💞
9 Tactics To Build A Stronger Mind
Alzheimer’s and dementia are increasingly dire concerns for modern society, but neurologist Lisa Genova — author of Remember: The Science of Memory and the Art of Forgetting — reassures us not to panic in this video. “Your memory is amazing. It is limitless in what it's capable of remembering if you supply it with the right kind of information, if you supply it with the right kind of tools and associations”. Very interesting watch.

I’ve been experimenting with different ‘soundtracks’ for different parts of my day. I like the idea of giving my brain audio clues for what I want to accomplish. My go-to for when I need to focus has been this Lord of the Ring | The Shire Ambient Spotify playlist. Additionally, I’ve really been digging this Forrest Gump playlist at the end of day when doing my shutdown routine.
A new resource that I found has been the website, AmbientSleepingPill.com. While I don’t use it for sleeping, I have been experimenting substituting it for my focus mode. Jury is still out if I like it or not, but still a great resource to pass along - especially since it’s free! (If you don’t prefer the website, I just found that it has a matching Spotify playlist).
Excellent Advice for Living
I’m a big fan of lists like these (as you can probably tell if you’ve been part of previous issues). I like this one because it’s not the typical advice you sometimes get with lists like these. A few of these have stayed with me a couple of weeks, especially this one:
Anger is not the proper response to anger. When you see someone angry you are seeing their pain. Compassion is the proper response to anger.
That one makes my brain hurt. The article is full of gems like that!
Words to wrap up:
“Your legacy is ultimately determined by two simple tests - is the enterprise better on the day you left than when you took over and how does your successor perform?”
- Kevin Sharer, ‘The CEO Test’
